 Christmas Party at Bedwas RFC
« Result #1 on Dec 16, 2009, 4:58pm »

Hello All,

I would just like to thank everyone at Bedwas rugby club for allowing me to use the upstairs room and the conservatory at the weekend (Saturday the 5th) for our Christmas party. It appears that the club is once again a resource that the local community can enjoy and it has returned to its roots as a friendly village club despite our continued and impressive survival in the Premiership.

I would like to thank the bar staff, Michelle in particular, for the wonderful hospitality! As the original lady managing the bar had to return home, it seemed that our party would have to come to an unexpected end but Michelle was fantastic and stepped in to look after us.

I returned to the club on Sunday morning to collect the remaining equipment and to clear up the remnants of our buffet (etc) but didn’t see Michelle in order to thank her again.

I am sure Michelle and Dominic will be excellent stewards over the coming years and I hope that anyone from the club viewing this will get the opportunity to communicate my appreciation.

Keep up the good work!

 Re: British and Irish Cup
« Result #4 on Oct 30, 2009, 4:31pm »

I have received the following response from Mr Mark Lewis, Chairman of Bedwas RFC:-

I would like to respond to the posting made by someone who seems to be from the Cross Keys Club with regards to the British & Irish Cup.

Firstly NO ONE from the Bedwas committee has said to the WRU that we do not want to be considered for the play offs however it needs to be made clear that there are two WRU Criteria’s this season. One criteria that would allows Bedwas to remain in the premiership and one that allows Bedwas to be considered for the British & Irish Cup.

We have put forward our application on the former which allows us to stay in the Premiership. The B&I Cup criteria is a challenge to far for the club for next season given the huge investment that would be required. This is not to say that we wouldn’t want to be considered in the future.

My initial thought’s of the new play off structure was that they were for league position, which Bedwas will be striving to be as high up the league as possible and would love to make the top 8.

It seems though that even if we came eighth or above as we have not put an application to make the B&I criteria we wouldn’t be able to play in the play off’s which is a shame because 1. We would love the extra games for revenue and 2. We would want the best league position we could attain.

By the way, there were two Bedwas committee representatives at the District A meeting. I am though very interested to know why someone from Cross Keys is so interested in the welfare of Bedwas RFC? I think our Supporters and Players know that this current committee are only committed to the prosperity of their club in a controlled and sensible manner.

 British and Irish Cup
« Result #5 on Oct 30, 2009, 9:11am »

It was reported in the last District 'A' meeting that the WRU said that Bedwas did NOT want to be considered for the Play Offs, which could lead to qualification for the British and Irish Cup. If this is true then surely this is disheartening for the players and supporters alike. A very strange decision considering that inclusion in this cup would bring in much needed revenue to any club.

If this is not true then why didn't the committee of Bedwas bother to send a representative to challenge the validity of the WRU's instruction to the meeting?

See you all on Saturday.

Yesterday we confirmed that you only have to want to play as a team to get results,
Cardiff with so much money and so called stars were the ones calling for the ref to blow for full time.
The team performance was outstanding big hits.followed by some of the best support work we have played so far this season. It would be wrong to pick any one player.
I was stood in front of some of the most ardent Cardiff supporters who could not believe how good we were (that was their words and take it from me they dont give praise very often)
Keep up the good work
While we are on about teamwork a message from the supporters to the new committee YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB.The club is on the way up.
I think a special message goes to the people who organised the reunion when is the next one.

BELOW IS TH WESTERN MAIL REPORT WHICH SAYS EVERYTHING
Veteran duo lift Bedwas in Welsh Premier
Sep 7 2009 by Our Correspondent, Western Mail

COACH Steve Law saluted two battle-hardened warriors after Bedwas rallied to take the scalp of Llanelli.
Captain and No 8 Deri Mattravers and loosehead prop Matthew Pettit came in for glowing praise after Bedwas wiped out a 20-9-inertval deficit.
“Considering Matthew Pettit is more at home on the tighthead, he had a superb game on the other side of the scrum,” stressed Law, in his ninth season at the helm.
“He was the catalyst, while Deri Mattravers was an inspirational captain, who scored what turned out to be the winning try.
“It just goes to show that the Welsh Premiership is not just the domain of young men.
“Both players have improved through playing semi-professional rugby and they are an inspiration to our younger players.”
Of the younger element in the Bedwas side, centre Tom Cooper showed up well, as did former Dragons hooker Kieran Crawford.
Law has to be admired for the way year in year out he gets the best out of players on a limited budget.
Bedwas are not everyone’s cup of tea on the circuit, but what you cannot take away from them is their will to win.
Llanelli, who came into the game on the back of a 47-16 home win over Cross Keys, will surely vouch for their never-say-die attitude.
The Parc y Scarlets side looked world beaters during the opening half, and a 20-9 interval lead was a fair reflection.
But once Bedwas ditched the charitable hosts mode and got down to the nitty-gritty, the game became more of a contest.
“Last season we pinched a result at Bedwas, 22-16, and things tend to even out,” said Llanelli head of rugby Anthony Buchanan, who was left counting the physical cost of the defeat.
“We picked up injuries to both Rob McCusker and Aaron Shingler that did hamper us, but it shouldn’t deflect from a spirited Bedwas fightback.
“This season we will be asking more young players to step up to the plate, and in the end I was delighted to leave with a point.”
Bedwas, who had faded during the final quarter the week before in a 34-15 loss against Neath, remedied that shortcoming against Llanelli.
Tries midway through the second half from lock James Murphy and No 8 Mattravers turned the game on its head.
It took them into a 24-23 lead, while two penalties from fly-half Gethin Worgan, who supplied 20 points, made things safe.
Llanelli, who possessed a powerful No 8 in Ben Morgan, scored two superb tries during their period of dominance.
Wing Dale Ford and flanker Rob McCusker got the touchdowns, but once solid virtues became the order of the day, it was Bedwas who were the masters.
Though Llanelli rallied strongly during seven minutes of time added on, Bedwas deservedly clung on.
